Entertainment Review: Vinnie Jones Wake Up Call

As a big fan of Snatch, and Lock, Stock and two Smoking Barrels, (and TV’s Fly Fish the World), I was all over this app.

Waking up to the dulcet tones of Vinnie just brings a big smile to my face!

This app is plain jane and benefits from that, IMO.

You select the time you want, and you select the wake up call. That’s it.

Of course, for me the hard bit is choosing which wake up call. For a guy who’s acting career is fairly small, Vinnie has a plethora of classic lines. In this app, they are the cleaned up versions (slightly disappointing but still great.)

Once you’ve chosen from the list, you get a full screen video of VJ reciting the bit. These are great as messages to leave on answering machines, hey even on your own office phone!

The one downside is that the app is a bit quiet. Even with the volume cranked up to max, it’s a little light eh?

For that reason, and it’s admitted niche appeal, I’m giving this a 4/5.

Payback iPhone App Can Use a Lesson From Vinnie Jones

Payback from Apex designs is the iPhone’s answer to the GTA series. It’s a sandbox style game where you play a wannabe British gangster rising up through the ranks of the criminal underworld. To get there you must punch, shoot, kill, steal, and speed your way through 6 chapters, which in turn will take you on a journey through three cities each with various illegal activities.

In freedom city (hmm sounds like liberty city!) you’ll meet a cockney gangster who thinks he’s Vinnie Jones. He issues missions to you from payphones. You’ll be taking out cops, picking up packages, dropping off gang members, stealing ice-cream trucks and ram raiding shops… to name but a few. Completing missions successfully will earn you enough money to unlock later levels and chapters.

Players of Payback can learn a thing or two about being a cockney gangster by downloading the Vinnie Jones Wake Up Call. This is a new app on the Apps store from Branded Research. Featured, are 27 new videos to choose from which include “It’s Been Emotional” and “Desert Eagle .50″ from the hit movie Snatch. From the movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels you can choose from video wake up calls like “Use Language Like That” and “I think the word you’re looking for, gentleman, is thank you.” Also included in the 27 are new videos of Vinnie jarring you out of your slumbers with one liners like “Oi, You! get Out of Bed!”

Graphically, Payback looks pretty good, and a definite step up from the GBA version of Payback. The viewpoint for the game is top-down 3D, similar in style to GTA 1 and 2, using a flat texture for street level, with buildings and other objects stretching up towards you. It works well, particularly in motion, adding to the feeling of a real, tangible living world. Unfortunately, there is some slowdown during explosions and when many objects on screen at once, but it’s not a huge factor.

Vinnie Jones Vows To Give Gazza Wake Up Call

Vinnie Jones reportedly wants to help Paul Gascoigne beat his alcohol addiction by taking him to a deserted island.

According to The Sun, the footballer-turned-actor believes that he can make Gascoigne connect with nature on the island by hunting animals and doing “man’s work”. Jones allegedly wants to document the experience with a video camera. A source said: “Vinnie thinks it’s terrible what Gazza has been going through and is convinced some tough love is needed. Vinnie loves hunting and fishing and reckons it does more to aid the soul than things like rehab.

“Gazza is a man’s man so it should be up his street. It will be a bit like a cross between Castaway and Lost with lots of survival tactics. With Vinnie and Gazza together it will be full of surprises.”

While Vinnie is getting his film crew together and making flight arrangements he should give Gazza an iPhone with the Vinnie Jones Wake Up Call iPhone application on it. Everytime Gazza feels like he needs a pep talk from Vinnie he can just watch him on the iPhone.

AT&T Offers Refurbished iPhone $99

AT&T on Saturday began offering $99 refurbished iPhones. In previous weeks rumors were flying around the internet of a possible $99 iPhone from Wal-Mart which was not the case. Wal-Mart yesterday announced an 8GB $197 iPhone. The refurbished iPhone is lowest price an iPhone has been sold in the United States for.

AT&T’s $99 iPhones are the same old models, slightly used.

According to att.com,

Refurbished phones are previously owned devices that have been unused or lightly used and returned during the 30-day trial period. Each refurbished phone is independently quality tested and loaded with the latest software to meet current factory standards. Some refurbished iPhone 3G devices will have minor scratches.

The sale ends Dec. 31 or when AT&T runs out of stock, whichever comes first. Macworld Expo starts the following week, leading to speculation that AT&T may be using the occasion to clear inventory in advance of new models or new memory configurations.

The battle for market share has become fierce with the iPhone steadily stealing market share from RIM with their Blackberry devices. With more iPhone being sold, the more users have access to the iTunes App Store where people with an iTunes account can download cool applications straight onto their hand sets. One of the rising stars of the App store is the Vinnie Jones Wake Up Call. As reported by Businessweek.com, the worlds largest retailer Wal-Mart announced on Friday that they will be carrying the iPhone in nearly all 2,500 stores from this Sunday. The 8GB iPhone will be sold for $197 and the 16GB iPhone for $297, these of course with an all new 2 year contract from AT&T.

Industry analysts see this as a huge win for Apple [AAPL], who recently have been chipping away at other mobile devices market share globally. Gary Severson, Senior Vice President, Entertainment said “We are delighted to bring customers this ground-breaking mobile technology. Our electronics associates have been preparing for many weeks for the arrival of iPhone 3G. We are excited to now help new customers learn more about the features and services that make the iPhone unique.”

Now with the iPhone being sold in Wal-Mart this can only mean good news for the iTunes App Store. The more iPhones that are sold the more people have access to the app store and are able to download the best in entertainment applications like the newly released Vinnie Jones Wake Up Call
